Sven Nys: Perfect in Mud

'Cross star Sven Nys captured in muddy splendor.

It was Ground Hog Day and Sven Nys' huge shadow, without a doubt, was big enough for an exciting muddy victory at the UCI CX men's elite World Championships in Louisville.

This is his second world title in nine years and Belgium's 12th in the past 16 years. The old world meets the new world. Louisville, Kentucky is miles away from the traditional European battle grounds. It was the first time the world championships were held outside of Europe. With the threat of flooding of the Ohio River, forced the keen organizers to run all four races on Saturday. The elite men's race was the final race and light snow was falling and a muddy course awaited the riders. The race turned out for the strong Belgians as Nys and Vantornout waged a battle for the lead. Vantornout was the victim when his pedal got caught on a fence. Nys took advantage of his compatriot's accident and took command for his second world title.

Nys described the American Eva Bandman Park course as European.

To win here is even maybe more special than to win in my own country. The respect I got from everybody over here helped me a lot.

The image above sums it all.
