As you all know, Guy and I are supporters of drinking beer ...enjoyed responsibly of course.
I cruised the net and found many articles on the virtues of the timeless hoppy elixir. After a demanding ride, sometimes, a nice cold beer will do. You can create your own situations. The funny thing is that all of a sudden beer is good for you. Destroying the skeptics belief that the age old beer belly and drinking suds is fattening or unhealthy.
Beer is fat-free, cholesterol-free and low in carbohydrates. A 341ml bottle of 5% alcohol beer has 5g of carbohydrates. A pear with skin has 26grams.
Don't stop eating fruit for beer, again a heathy dose of common sense. Having a beer or two per day is healthier choice than any sugary soda. Actually, I'm not a soda fan it's too sickly sweet for my taste. I avoid it.
Beer is nutritious. It's made from hops, barley and wheat including B vitamins, riboflavin, niacin and zinc. Add important minerals; potassium, calcium and phosphorous. A study from the Journal of Nutrition and Biochemistry suggests that the 'levels of antioxidants found in blood are elevated after beer is consumed.'
And, better still, drinking a moderate amount can lower the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and diabetes. From the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture suggests that drinking beer moderately may ward off osteoporosis. Studies suggest Xanthohumol, a plant compound found in hops may help prevent cancer, reduce menopausal hot flashes and fight off osteoporosis.
The news is good. We will continue on to enjoy the happy hoppy suds... Cheers!
