On the steepest sections up the Valgrande-Pajares climb average 23%!
Watching the steepest slopes was for me agonizing. Seeing the riders in their compacts flashback to my hell ride up Indian Arm (with the FRFuggitivi group). That ride near Deep Cove, just north of Vancouver, was 23%. Unsuspecting for us just because it was new territory for us to ride. In contrast it was beautiful scenery and pure ugly climbing. Most riders looked like they were riding still, I can relate.
Contador used a 32-tooth sprocket.
Dario Cataldo won and hung on to survive up to Cuitu Negru in front of Thomas de Gendt. And, wait it's not over yet, Rodriguez took third place from Contador in their mano-a-mano battle.
What an exciting finish to a stage of pain.
Saturday will be the ultimate and last mountain finish because more pain awaits on the top of the Bol del Mundo!
