Monday is the 92nd Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in Catalonia, Spain.
Earlier this season, there was financial concerns that threatened the existence of the third oldest stage race in cycling. Catalunya is only behind the Tour de France (1903) and Giro d'Italia (1909). Gratefully, the financial woes are behind and the race carries on.
I'll be eagerly watching the seven stage UCI World Tour race suited for the mountain goats. The queen stage is on Wednesday finishing at the ski station at Port Ainé, a 19km killer climb at 6.3%, 1947 metres. Safe to say, it is the highest point and will be the decisive stage of the race.
Garmin-Barracuda is sending a super strong team of climbers (Hesjedal, Vande Velde, Danielson) ready to ride for Dan Martin. He's ready to win after placing second in 2009 and 2011!
Full team rosters here.
Wednesday's Queen stage will be a rough ride.
